8 Days / 7 Nights - Amboseli Horseback Safari

Enjoy 8 days on horseback in the shadow of Mount Kilimanjaro around Amboseli National Park and the Chyulu Hills. You will also pass through the game-rich area of Kiturua Game Concession.

Day 1 - Arrival, first ride

You fly to Amboseli National Park and enjoy a game drive in the morning on the way to the first campsite on the southwestern border of the park. Amboseli is home to some 1,500 elephants that live around the swamps in the spectacular shadows of Mount Kilimanjaro. In addition to the famous elephants there are many hippos, buffalos, antelopes, predators and birds to spot. After arrival at the camp, a brief introduction and unch you will go on your first ride which will enable riders and horses got get to know and used to each other. On this first outing you can see baboons, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, impala and gazelles.

Day 2 – Ride at dawn and bush walk in the afternoon

You will take a ride at dawn to explore the territory of the Kiturua Game Concession. At this time of the day herds of elephant from their nocturnal feeding grounds migrate across the open plains towards the water holes to quench their thirst. Initially, you ride through dense bush, later the site clears then becomes sandy and perfect for long canters. At the water holes you can have a hearty breakfast in the shade of acacia trees. After the break, it's back to camp for a late lunch and a rest. During an afternoon bushwalk you can experience the local flora and fauna from a new perspective and train to read tracks. A romantic sundowner and a delicious dinner complete with exciting day.

Day 3 - Ride through bushland and afternoon game drive

After an early breakfast you start yet another ride at dawn. The ride takes you through dense bush that provides a good cover for many animals. You will encounter guineafowls, giraffes, jackals and hyenas. After lunch and a short rest at the camp, you will go on a game drive. Kiturua is home to many different wild animals and the afternoon light offers the best chances of phenomenal photos. On a particularly magnificent place you will stof for a sundowner drink. On the way back to the camp a spotlight will be used to identify nocturnal animals and predators.

Day 4 - Day ride through Amboseli National Park

You will leave the camp in the early morning with a packed breakfast. Today you will cover a distance of about 50 km. Leave the Kiturua Concession and pass through the very wildlife-rich Enkongo Narok swamp on the way to Amboseli National Park. Here large herds of elephants, buffalos and many antelope species are found, usually accompanied or observed by various predators. A picnic lunch with cool drinks make a welcome break for horse and rider. After about 7 hours you will reach Olgulului Ranch on the northwestern boundary of Amboseli National Park. Look forward to a hot shower, drinks around the campfire and dinner.

Day 5 - Day ride from the ranch to the Chyulu Hills Olgulului

You leave the camp early in the morning for another long ride in the northern part of the majestic Chyulu Hills. As before, you will have a picnic lunch halfway. Enjoy the varied landscape of typical dark red earth, black clay (Black Cotton) and basalt of volcanic origin. You may encounter herds of eland antelope, kudu, oryx, gerenuk, gazelles and giraffes, which migrate from the swamps of Amboseli to the Chyulu Hills.

Day 6 - Hike on Lenkiloriti and ride in the afternoon

In the morning take a hike up the Lenkiloriti Mountain, a large volcano that offers unparalleled views of the Chyulu hills. Take your binoculars and look for rhinos and elephant mothers with their young. You will return to camp for lunch. In the afternoon you will ride through the beautiful volcanic landscape and perhaps see leopards that are particularly fond of hunting, and walking in this area. After dinner, you could still take a night game drive to look for leopards you might have missed and other nocturnal animals.

Day 7 - Morning ride to Crater Camp

After breakfast ride through dense acacia woodlands towards the Chyulu Hills. The route meanders through seemingly endless acacia forest. The ground is ideal for galloping and if you want you can also do a couple of jumps with your horse. The area is home to many mammals. Here elephants with the most powerful tusks in Africa can be seen. For lunch, you can reach Crater Camp, located in the vicinity of a large crater in the woods with a view that stretches to the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro. Late afternoon you can climb into the crater in search of the rare Verreaux eagle that builds its nest in inaccessible rock ledges in the crater wall or you can discover a world of caves that lie beneath the crater. Enjoy the sunset from this spectacular camp.

Day 8 - Departure

Enjoy the end of this safari with a full bush breakfast, followed by transport to the airstrip and flight back to Nairobi.
