9 Days / 8 nights of Mount Kilimanjaro - Mawenzi - Kibo Tour

Day 1 – Arrival

You leave Nairobi in the morning and head 230 km southeast to Loitokitok (4-5 hours). On clear days, you can already see the majestic Kilimanjaro stand out in the landscape. Dinner and overnight stay will be at Kibo Slopes Cottages.

Day 2 - Excursion to Amboseli National Park

You take a trip to Amboseli National Park, "home of the elephant." In addition to the elephants, the park also hosts a wide variety of other wildlife. In the evening you will be introduced to your guide and will pack your mountain gear.

Day 3 - Climb to Camp Sekimba

After completing the formalities with the Kenyan Customs, you will be transferred to the Tanzanian Customs 4 km from Loitokitok. You will be driven a further 8 km to Nalemoru (2100 m), at the starting point of your expedition. The climb begins with a natural rainforest that is home to Colobus monkeys and birds. The 10 km walk takes about 4 hours. You spend the night in tents at Sekimba Camp close to the forest.

Day 4 - Ascent to the Kikelewa Caves

You will enjoy your first breakfast in the open air with excellent views of the levels above and below the massive Kibo. Your walk this day will be through heathland to Kikelewa Caves (3600 m). The 14 km long climb takes about 6 hours. The Kikelewa Caves are located near the Kikelewa River where you can take a refreshing dip. You will be staying in a mobile tented camp.

Day 5 - Ascent to the Mawenzi Hut

Day 5's destination is the Mawenzi Hut, at an altitude of 4330m. There you can enjoy a magnificent view of Kibo, which is the goal of your hike. The picturesque lake at the foot of Mawenzi summit is the last water point before the summit. Experienced climbers can choose to also conquer Hans Meyer Peak (5149m). You will be staying in a mobile tented camp.

Day 6 - Ascent to the School Hut

On day 6 you will walk Kibo saddle which serves to acclimate to the imminent descent of about 4000 m and the subsequent rise to about 4750 m. Take a rest for the challenge ahead - the ascent to Uhuru summit the next day.

Day 7 - Ascent to the summit and descent to Horombo Hut

After a short nigh, the final ascent begins at 1.30 in the morning. The path gradually steepens and finally reaches Gillman Point (5685 m) where you can watch the sunrise and the magnificent ice fields. After a short break you can proceed along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5895 m). The descent will be via the Kibo Hut where you will have lunch before another three-hour descent to Horombo Hut (3720 m).

Day 8 - Descent to Maranga Gate

After breakfast and a last look at the Kibo summit that you have successfully conquered it is time to continue the descent. After lunch you head from Mandara to Marangu Gate (1800 m). From there you will be driven to Nakara Hotel were you will take a well deserved hot shower and have dinner.

Day 9 - Return

Your expedition ends with a trip to Kilimanjaro Airport for your flight back to Nairobi.
