8 Days / 7 Nights Mount Kilimanjaro - Machame Route

Machame route, also known as "Whiskey Route", is considered by many to be the most attractive of all Kilimanjaro routes. The ascent of the west, and later along the South Circuit guarantees a breathtaking 180-degree scenery and excellent views of Kibo.

Day 1-Arrival

After your arrival at Kilimanjaro Airport you will be received and transferred to Aishi Hotel on the foot of Kilimanjaro near the Machame Gate for dinner and overnight.

Day 2 – Machame Hut

After breakfast you will be transferred to Machame Gate (1850m) where your hike starts. The day's hike takes 5-7 hours (15km) and leads through natural rain forest and giant heather between River Weru and Makoa to Machame Hut at 3000m. The night will be spent in a fly camp.

Day 3 – Shira Camp

Today's hike (5-6 hrs) takes 8km and leads down a gorge where you cross several dry riverbeds before ascending a cliff. Here you can view the Shira Plateau, the oldest of Kilimanjaro's 3 calderas, and enjoy a well-deserved lunch break. After the rest you move on towards Shira Hut, which is situated at 3800m. The night will be spent in a fly camp.

Day 4

Today's long hike (7-8 hours) brings you to Kaanga Valley on the southern circuit. The path takes you through sparse vegetation to the start of the alpine desert. Here you branch to Barranco Hut leaving the Lava Tower Rock on your left.

Day 5-Barafu Hut

You leave Kaanga River behind and move on to Barafu Hut (4600m). After a gentle 2hr walk through moorland and dry heather you will bypass a steep rocky trail from where you will have a magnificent view of Kibo, Mawenzi and the plains below.

Day 6 – Uhuru Peak

After a short night and a hot drink the final ascend of Kibo starts between midnight and 1.00am. This section gets gradually steeper as you zigzag for 5-6 hours on the frozen scree or snow fields depending on the season before you reach Stella Point (5700m) at sunrise. On the crater rim you can watch sunrise and the magnificent ice fields. After a short break you can proceed along the crater rim to the Uhuru Peak (5895m) reaching there at about 8.30am. After the obligatory summit photo and meeting the technical climbers coming from the west you descend to Barafu Hut for lunch before proceeding to Mweka Hut (3100m).

Day 7 – Mweka Gate

After a superb achievement the final 4 hour descend takes you through a rain forest to Mweka Gate (1400m). From here you proceed to Aishi Hotel for a hot shower, dinner and a good night's rest.

Day 8 - Departure

Our safari ends with a transfer to Kilimanjaro Airport for departure.
